The second Farnham Charity Bike Ride took place on a clear day that got steadily warmer and sunnier.

We were expecting more riders than the 2009 event and as soon as the Registration Desk opened there were riders wanting to check-in. 154 riders had applied in advance, and almost as many more entered on the day.

The ride was started at 10.00 by Farnham Town Mayor, Councillor John Ward, and by then there were over 300 riders with people coming from across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and London.

The 23 mile route and the refreshment stations were the same as 2009, plus a new station at The Cherry Tree in Rowledge where the free sandwiches and charity hog roast proved a big draw for riders not in a hurry to finish and their supporters.

The first rider back completed the route in just over 65 minutes and all returned well before the 15:00 hrs close with many moving into Gostrey Meadow to enjoy the Council’s Picnic in the Park concert.

All who completed the event were presented with a certificate and goody bag including discount vouchers and freebies from the event sponsors.

It was a fabulous day and the immediate feedback from riders was extremely positive. This was backed up a few weeks later with the results of an online rider survey:

  • 98% said expectations were exceeded
  • Over 90% rated the signage, route and marshals as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’
  • Over 70% rated the refreshment points, start area, entry form, rider pack as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’
  • Over 70% rated Farnham Bike Ride as ‘Better’ or ‘Much Better’ than other charity bike rides/events experienced
  • 100% of respondents will recommend the event to friends and colleagues.

We also received valuable feedback on suggestions that could make future events even better.

Of course the event’s main purpose is to raise money for local charities and the 2010 event generated more than £6,500, up more than 50% on the 2009 total!

Thanks to everybody that made all this possible – organisers, marshals, riders and sponsors alike! Special mention to St John’s Ambulance, for being there but thankfully not required. Thanks also to East Street Cycles, Nokia and www.0800sports.co.uk for their sponsorship and support.

We’re looking forward to another successful event on 3rd July 2011, and hope to see you there!
