Sunday 3rd July 2011 – The Biggest and Best Yet!

Cyclists of all ages from Farnham and beyond gathered in their hundreds, ready to cycle 25 or 50 miles in aid of local charities. By the time the ride was started by Farnham Mayor Gillian Hargreaves and M.C. Richard Bousfield there were 557 cyclists checked-in and ready to go – a record for this event.

The routes were predominantly on minor roads through Surrey and Hampshire countryside. Both offered scenic views, country pubs and a few challenging hills! Martin Goult was the first to complete the 25-mile route, after 1 hour 21 minutes closely followed by Peter Williams, and Julian Goatee was the first person to complete the 50-mile route, with a time of 2 hours 31 minutes.

The number of riders exceeded the combined total of the first two years. Similarly, funds raised quickly smashed the £10,000 combined total of the first two events and eventually totalled more than £20,000. All event proceeds went to local charities and causes including Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice who supported this event.

The event organisers, Farnham Round Table and St. Andrew’s Infant School PTA, were delighted with this response, and also the reaction of the riders to the event. The results of the 2011 post-event survey were very positive, highlights included:

  • 50% said their expectations were ‘exceeded’.
  • The most popular aspects were the route, marshals and signage – all scoring over 90% ‘satisfied’ with at least 65% ‘very satisfied’.
  • The start area, website and refreshment points were also rated highly – all scoring between 80% and 90% ‘satisfied’ with at least 40% ‘very satisfied’.
  • 55% said the Farnham Charity Bike Ride is ‘slightly better’ or ‘much better’ than other bike rides/events experienced.
  • 99% of respondents say they are ‘quite likely’ (26%) or ‘very likely’ (73%) to recommend FCBR to friends and relatives.

Thanks to all the organisers, marshals and riders that helped make this event such a success and created the friendly atmosphere that made the day so memorable.

Special mention to our sponsors East Street Cycles, Nokia and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice for supporting the event with such enthusiasm, and St John’s Ambulance and RayNet for their help in ensuring the event ran smoothly.
